Eileen Tomy
My name is Eileen Tomy, and I am a junior majoring in Computer Science at UCF. I am from Orlando, FL, and graduated from Winter Park High School. One of my favorite classes at UCF has been Object Oriented Programming with Professor Dencker, who is also my favorite professor. I have always enjoyed coding in Java, so I was excited to use it again in that class. Professor Dencker kept us engaged and made the class more fun and interesting, which only helped me enjoy the language even more.
Through my classes and experiences, I have realized how valuable it is to have a strong support network. I know I would have appreciated a larger community of like-minded women in STEM when I was first starting out. That’s why I decided to get involved in the WiSTEM program. As a mentor, I want to help my future mentees discover what they’re passionate about and reach their full potential while knowing they have a strong support system to lean on every step of the way.
Outside of my classes, I enjoy scrapbooking, reading books, traveling, and playing video games. My advice for WiSTEM students: Don’t be afraid to try everything. It might seem intimidating or unfamiliar at first, but you never know what you’ll end up loving until you give it a shot!
