Heily Franco

My name is Heily Franco, and I’m a senior majoring in Biomedical Sciences. I graduated high school from Eastland Christian School right here in Orlando, so I consider myself a Florida native even though I spent my first few years in New York. My favorite class I’ve taken at UCF is Medical Biochemistry with Dr. Borgon, who is my favorite professor at the university. Learning about the different metabolic pathways that occur in our bodies was fascinating, and Dr. Borgon is a great lecturer who makes the class as simple as possible and offers letters of recommendation to those who do well. When I’m not busy studying for classes, I enjoy watching movies. I am currently the vice president of a film club on campus and truly enjoy discussing movies I like and don’t like with my peers. This is my 2nd year as a WiSTEM mentor, and I love that this position has allowed me to give the advice and support that I wish I had gotten in my freshman year. I love listening to and hanging out with my mentees and only expect that we all (mentors and mentees included) respect one another’s time and differences. My biggest advice to incoming freshmen would be to focus on the journey as opposed to worrying constantly about the final destination. When you do this, I promise that the right opportunities will come your way.
