Alicia Guisbiers

Hello, I’m Alicia! I’ve been interested in science for as long as I can remember, always curious about how the world works. I was born in Belgium and moved to the United States in 2015, living in several states before attending Benton High School in Arkansas. During my senior year, I decided to attend UCF, which brought me to Florida. Now, I’m a second-year student pursuing a double major in Physics and Photonic Science and Engineering.
At UCF, some of my favorite classes have been calculus and physics. I’ve had the opportunity to learn from Professor Boustique and Dr. Sokol, who both showed incredible patience, passion, and dedication to their students. Their enthusiasm for teaching made these subjects even more enjoyable and encouraged me to continue exploring STEM.
This is my first year as a STEM Ambassador. I joined the program to become better at explaining challenging scientific concepts to people with different backgrounds and experiences. I know that some students may develop a negative view of STEM after a difficult experience with science or math, so I want to help make STEM feel more approachable and enjoyable. I hope to encourage students to see that they are capable of succeeding in STEM.
My advice to STEM students is to remember why you started. It’s easy to lose sight of your goals when things get difficult, but struggling does not mean you are failing. Mistakes are part of learning, so keep pushing forward and don’t be afraid to try again.
Outside of school, I enjoy running, reading, and gaming. I participated in my first 5K last year and hope to do another one soon! Right now, I’m especially into sci-fi and mystery books. When I need to destress, I enjoy building LEGO sets and going to the movies.
