Heily Franco
Hey, everyone! My name is Heily Franco, and I’m a sophomore majoring in Biomedical Sciences. I graduated from Eastland Christian School right here in Orlando, Florida in 2022 and have been attending UCF since the Summer 2022 semester. Throughout my time here, one of my favorite classes has been Principles of Journalism (JOU 3015). I was able to hear many incredible journalists discuss their passion for unbiased truth and was inspired to be civically engaged in global, national, and local affairs. In terms of my favorite instructor, I’d have to go with Michelle Yeargain who teaches Biology 1 and 2. Her passion for the study is evident through the way she lectures, making the information so much easier to digest and retain. Though I was never involved with WiSTEM as a mentee, I chose to get involved as a mentor because I believe it is so important to surround oneself with a community of like-minded individuals. It can truly help in making these four years a time one can look back on with pride. What I expect out of this program is that both mentors (myself included) and mentees come with an open mind. Just as some of you might learn from me, I am equally as capable of learning from you. My advice for incoming CECS freshmen is to focus on enjoying the journey as opposed to worrying about the final destination. When you do this, the right opportunities will naturally come your way. In my free time, I enjoy watching movies and writing opinionated reviews. Working as the secretary of a film RSO on campus has allowed me to see so many interesting movies that I enjoy discussing with my peers.
